If I was to do one thing today, it would be to write about forgiveness, mainly self-forgiveness, as it’s something I have struggled with since I was 16.
Forgiveness is really just understanding and letting go, and the most important person that we must understand and forgive is ourselves.
Rather than beating ourselves up for everything we deem to be ‘wrong’, to then feel more negative emotions such as shame, regret, disgust, frustration etc, in the arising of those negative thoughts, can we instead find the understanding of those actions? To then remind ourselves that we didn’t have the awareness back then, compared to what we know now? As Jesus said “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
And when we find this understanding, could we then even go a little further, and find compassion for that younger self?
If we are always condemning ourselves for what we deem to be our failures, then we will always live from a place of never quite meeting the mark, never feeling good enough, like there’s always something ‘wrong’ with us.
Forgiveness = Understanding. And I believe that only once we forgive & understand ourselves, that we can then do the same towards others.
Unforgiveness keeps us in a state of disharmony; it keeps us in a lower vibration. Forgiveness allows us to let go and release that negative energy that has been sitting on our shoulders, and brings us back to a more peaceful, harmonious state of being. We can then move on with our lives without being so held down.
Forgiveness does not equal approving of a situation. But it does equal understanding, awareness, and letting go.
